Your journey begins in Salzburg, a city where music, history, and alpine beauty meet. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, explore Mozart’s birthplace, and take in the grand baroque architecture. As evening falls, enjoy a hearty meal in one of the city’s traditional beer halls, where the atmosphere is lively and the views of the fortress are unforgettable.
After enjoying Salzburg, we will train to Linz where your bike adventure begins, a dynamic city straddling the Danube River in the northern part of the country, known for its thriving arts and technology scene. Linz. has transformed into a European Capital of Culture (2009) and a UNESCO City of Media Arts. Its charming Old Town features Baroque architecture, cozy cafes and the impressive Linz Castle overlooking the river.
As you cycle eastward, each day brings new highlights and charming surprises. A few standout moments along the route include:
Mauthausen Concentration Camp is one of Europe’s most historically significant Nazi labor camps, preserved as a memorial to its victims. Visiting offers a powerful, reflective look at the realities of the Holocaust. This is included but optional.
Melk Abbey: Towering above the Danube River, this Baroque gem is one of Austria’s most iconic sites. Its stunning architecture, combined with panoramic views over the river, makes it an essential stop. Whether we enjoy a local heuriger (wine tavern) or a riverside cafe pairing Wachau Valley wine, we will be sure to enjoy!
Dürnstein is a storybook village on the Danube, famous for its blue abbey tower, hillside vineyards, and romantic medieval charm. Biking into town lets you soak in the Wachau Valley’s beauty at its most peaceful and picturesque.
Vienna: a blend of imperial grandeur with vibrant culture-home to baroque palaces, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, world-class museums, and a legendary music scence. Cozy coffeehouses, lively markets, and hillside wine taverns add local charm to this elegant, artistic city.
The journey takes you through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rolling hills blanketed with vineyards and orchards. It’s the perfect spot to pause, savour local delicacies, and enjoy a glass of Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, the valley’s signature wines. This route is not only a cyclist’s dream but also a cultural exploration, offering a chance to experience the stunning Danube River Valley while immersing yourself in the rich heritage and traditions of Austria. With its breathtaking landscapes, charming towns, and unique historical sites, this bike tour promises an unforgettable adventure.
What to expect biking
Expect gentle, mostly flat, well-paved cycle paths following the river’s edge — the Danube Cycle Path is designed for leisure cyclists and offers smooth asphalt (and occasionally well-maintained country-road sections), making it comfortable even for relatively modest fitness levels. On an itinerary like ours you’ll typically cover 30–60 km per day (sometimes a bit more on longer legs), letting you ride at a relaxed pace with time left over for sightseeing, lunch, or short detours. The path is signposted and widely used, and often separated from busy traffic — which adds a strong layer of safety and ease.
You can expect the journey to feel more like a steady ride through changing landscapes — riverside plains, vineyards, small towns — rather than a strenuous athletic challenge. The terrain makes the route ideal for our woman’s group seeking relaxed travel, light exercise and good company. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual traveler, this journey from Salzburg through Linz to Vienna will fill your heart with beauty, culture, and unforgettable memories together.
